Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha/8 begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The players will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many players get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same approach in just about all poker games.

The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

While it seems complex initially, following a few hands you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming range of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have several players trying for the high hand, and a few shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
