Pai Gow uses 53 cards; the normal 52-card basic deck and a single joker. The player is assigned 7 cards face up and the croupier receives seven cards face down.

A 5 card hand and a 2 card hand have to be made from the seven cards dealt, the 5 card hand must be higher than the two card hand. To win, a player is required to have both of his hand totals to be better than the houses.
