Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he enjoyed taking part in different card games when he was young. He found himself becoming really competitive in these card games as he was playing his father. After finishing high school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York to participate in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were rough as he would play countless hours and lost a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He believed he could improve his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and focus even more on the game.

The definite advancement in his game happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would often challenge each other. Howard was able to access some of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would tweak his logical thinking abilities. Howard used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.

He also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the best female players the poker arena today. He moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
