Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he liked playing numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting really aggressive in these card games while competing against his father. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little bit and headed to New York to compete in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were tough as he would play countless hours and do not win a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he might boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus more on poker.

The definite improvement in his game began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would often challenge each other. Howard was able to access some of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard would tweak his logical thinking abilities. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL holdem.

He also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer moved to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
