Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed taking part in different card games when he was young. He found himself getting very competitive in these particular card games while playing his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little while and moved away to New York City to participate in some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he would play extensive hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He believed he might better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and focus attention more on poker.

The actual advancement in his skills happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would regularly wager against each other. He was able to access several of the best players in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his strategic thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.

Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the greatest women players the poker arena has ever seen. He moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
