Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha/8 begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another round of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting happens at which point the river card is flipped. The players will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few entrants get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same approach in almost all poker games.

The lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem complex at the start, following a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play simply enough. Since you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing array of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals trying for the high, as well as a few battling for the low hand.
