Stu Ungar is thought to be by many to the greatest NL Texas hold em Poker gambler ever.

The 3 time World Poker Champion was born in New York in 1953 and began betting poker before becomming a teenager.

The young gambler began wagering gin and at the age of 10 had won his very first gin rummy tournament, while on holiday with his parents. By the age of fourteen the small poker maestro had become a professional and dropped out of school.

In ‘54 Stu entered the record books by winning 10 grand in a gin tournament without sacrificing a single hand, a record which still appears in New York these days.

The quick speaking superstar has been compared, in poker terms, to sporting superstars such as Joe Namath and Tiger Woods. Stu Ungar had a real skill for wagering poker except regardless of his successes in Holdem poker, he preferred betting gin.

Stu once said that there may several day be a far better NL Holdem player than him but he couldn’t see how anyone could ever be a greater gin player.

In 1980 Stu was put on the world map as one of the very best Hold’em Poker gamblers in the entire world when he was crowned World Poker Champ for the first time. Amazingly it was the 1st time he had played in the tournament.

The right after year he dismissed any suggestions that it had been luck, by successfully defending his title. And in ‘97 Stu set the record by winning his 3rd World poker championship.

Except this poker master also fought with substance abuse and a year right after winning his third title Stu Ungar died in his hotel room. According to medical doctors, he had died from a cardiac event which was caused by his lifestyle.

Stu had started with absolutely nothing except his skill and expertise for the game which made this poker good a millionaire several times over.
