Web High Stakes Poker- Who is Gus Hansen?

by Alejandro on May 10th, 2010

Gus Hansen had a wonderful year on the WPT where he was the only participant to achieve final table in 3 of the events. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You might recall one of the biggest pots in big stakes poker history up against Daniel Negreanu. Gus raked in a big pot with 4 of a kind against Daniel’s full house. Hansen has made many televised poker appearances and is deemed to be one of the greatest enthusiasts around the world. While gambling on net poker, another side of Hansen has been seen. He regularly participates in the 200/400 No Limit maximum buy-in of Forty Thousand dollars. Gus usually buys-in for the min of $16, 000 and plays very weak. He waits for a decent hand and then goes all-in. I accept that Gus is a great poker player but certainly not even close to the everyday players at 200/400no limit. Unless he is broke, he has absolutely no reason to settle at the table with the min buy-in.

Buying in for the min takes most of the skill out of deep stack poker. Gus is assumed to be 1 of the greatest players in the world but he cannot buy in for the total dollar value. I think television can alter our perception of the real world at times. The best players in the world might just be players you have won’t have heard of before. Gus can be seen competing in online poker on Full Tilt. He generally participates in high stakes omaha/8 and texas holdem. Gus Hansen has shown himself as a competition player. Can he back up his talents in cash games?
